The new issue of First Things contains an article by Hoover Institute fellow Mary Eberstadt on perhaps the most controversial (oddly enough, this beats out the Incarnation) Catholic teaching, Humanae Vitae. I just started reading through it and already it has proven itself to be the most insightful article I have read this year. The article details social science's empirical verification of the prophetic warnings given to the world by the Pope in 1968. She connects the dots and also gives us an analysis of the current moral climate; it may not be even necessary to say, but things do not look good.
I cannot recommend this article highly enough - readers of any mindset or worldview who care about our social well-being owe it to themselves to give this article serious consideration.
